Artist’s Biography

I have been interested in photography since high school. At that time, I developed and printed my own black and white photographs. In college, I started to use color slide film. After college, many other activities precluded time for photography.
In 1998, I decided to make more time for photography. A two week workshop with Joel Meyerowitz in Tuscany was followed by some weekend workshops at the International Center for Photography (ICP) in Manhattan, attendance at the ICP Photographers’ Lectures series, and critiques at the Manhattan Miniature Camera Club and by a color slide study group of the Photographic Society of America.
I am a member of the Manhattan Miniature Camera Club, the Photographic Society of America, and a member of the Board of Photography and Imaging, Inc. I am an Exhibiting Artist Member of the National Arts Club and an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club.

90th and Fifth : 90th and Fifth

The entrance to Central Park at 90th and Fifth is a slice of life in the sun or under the clouds, during all the seasons. From the old guard box to the jogging path along the old reservoir, New Yorkers leave their cares behind and exercise body, mind, and dog. While the news of the day focuses on what is unusual and abnormal, these pictures focus on the routine of everyday life and the importance that a piece of a park plays in urban life and in the urban landscape.

New York Street Trades : Ordinary people working their trades on the street are rarely noticed as the rest of us go about our normal activities. At the end of the 19th century, Eugene Atget made a series of photographs of people practicing petits-metiers ("little trades") on the streets of Paris. He made these photographs to market to artists for use in their work. He also thought these little trades were vanishing and wanted to document them. I was touched by the human beings in these images.
My photographs of people with street trades in 21st century New York show that, while the trades may be different, street trades still exist. For some of these people, this is the first step on the economic ladder of America. For others, it is as high as they will go. All are working at what they can do. They have their self respect. They have earned our notice.
